The Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Prof. Usman Aliyu Malami, has appealed to journalists covering the health sector to continue to enlighten Nigerians on the causes, preventive measures and treatment of all forms of cancers.
He made the appeal at a brainstorming session with select journalists in his office, in Abuja.
Prof. Usman Aliyu Malami disclosed that the President Bola Ahmed Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government, within the space of less than one year, has made major pronouncements and initiated policies that will improve cancer care in the country.
He noted events of the past few weeks championed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, is a testament that cancer care in Nigeria has taken a new dimension.
He explained that NICRAT has mapped out strategies to ensure that Nigerians who need cancer care have access to it at the right time.
The Institute, according to Prof. Malami, will continue to work closely with journalists to ensure that Nigerians get the right information and education on how to prevent themselves from all forms of cancers.
The major highlight of the brainstorming session was the formation of a group christened-Journalists Against Cancer (JAC).
Speaking, the President, Association of Nigeria Health Journalists, Joseph Kadiri, applauded the NICRAT Director General for the progress made in cancer care in Nigeria since his appointment in the past one year.
He assured that journalists covering the health sector will continue to support NICRAT to propagate its activities and ensure that Nigerians are enlightened on the efforts made by the President Tinubu-led government through NICRAT to transform and improve cancer care in Nigeria.
