These registries provide comprehensive data that is used for public health planning, resource allocation, and epidemiological research. They capture all cancer cases within their defined area, offering a complete picture of cancer burden.

1962

Ibadan Cancer Registry

The first Cancer Registry in Nigeria established in 1962, located within the Department of Pathology at the University College Hospital, Cancer incidence data from this registry were published for the time periods 1960-1962, 1960-1965, and 1960-1969 in the first three volumes of cancer incidence in 5 Continents (CIV), IBCR became defunct in 2002, but was revived in 2009.

Data from the registry has been presented in the first 3 volumes of the cancer in 5 Continents publication by IARC (CIV), the IARC scientific publication No. 153, Cancer in Africa and more recently in GLOBACAN 2012 where data from this registry along with the Abuja and Calabar PBCR were used to derive national estimates for Nigeria.

Calabar Cancer Registry

Calabar Cancer Registry (CCR) is located in the pathology the 451-bed university of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), CCR though started in 1979, as a hospital-based tumor registry, reporting cancer cases at the UCTH, in 2009, the registry is now a Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR).

CCR has presented its data at various local and internal conferences. The most common cancers    in Calabar were also reported in the IARC scientific publication cancer in Africa, in 2003 (Parkin et al) and more recently in the GLOBOCAN 2012 database of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) where data alongside that from the Ibadan cancer registry and the Abuja cancer registry were collated to derive national cancer statistics for Nigeria. The Calabar cancer registry is a member of the African Cancer Registry Network and the International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC)

Enugu Cancer Registry

Enugu cancer registry is domiciled in the Oncology Department of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu. The registry established in 1988 as a Hospital Based Cancer Registry, but until recently it was upgraded by NSCR in 2012 to start collecting population data.

Abuja Cancer Registry

Abuja cancer registry (ABCR) was conceived in 2009 as a Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR). The registry is domiciled in the Oncology Department of the National Hospital Abuja (NHA), but receiving substantial data from the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) registry.

Data from the ABCR has been published in international peer reviewed journals and used to calculate the national estimates for Nigeria in GLOBACAN 2012.

Sokoto Cancer Registry

Sokoto Cancer Registry was established by NSCR as a Population Based Cancer Registry in November 2013. The registry is domiciled in the Histopathology Department of the 250- bed capacity Usman Danfodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto. The tertiary institution has huge facilities for Cancer diagnosis and treatment such as MRI, CT scan, radiotherapy and a well-equipped pathology unit.

Ekiti Cancer Registry is located in the Department of Anatomic Pathology at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, ECR was upgraded by NSCR to collect Population Based data following a training of the registry staff.
